A big event on Saturday 28th October 2023 at Bath's National Trust Assembly Rooms

Something special is on the horizon for the communities of Fairfield House and the City of Bath in October 2023 at the Bath National Trust Assembly Rooms.

The return of the Freedom in the City Festival of learning, a free to attend, one day, pop up #BlackHistoryMonth festival celebrating the vibrant legacy of HIM Emperor Haile Selassie I in the City of Bath

In October 1954, His Imperial Majesty Emperor Haile Selassie I, Emperor of Ethiopia, returned to his home in the City of Bath and was awarded the great civic honour of the Freedom of the City of Bath.

Due to the Italian invasion of Ethiopia in the beginnings of WW2, the Ethiopian Royal family were resident in exile from 1936 - 1943 at Fairfield House in Newbridge, Bath. After returning triumphantly to liberate Ethiopia with British support in 1941, the Emperor’s return to the UK in 1954 was not as a refugee, but as an honoured state visitor.

The Emperor presented his home as a gift to the City in 1958 for the good of the aged.

Join the diverse communities of Fairfield House on Saturday 28th October 2023 from 10am - 5pm at the National Trust Assembly Rooms in Bath, as we host a pop up multi cultural celebration of the Emperor of Ethiopia being honoured as a Freeman of the City of Bath.

All Welcome
